The black Kia was reported to be driving "erratically" while heading north on Route 140 in Freetown around 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, according to Massachusetts State Police.
By the time police responded, the Kia had crashed off the road and into a tree near mile marker 10.6, hitting three other vehicles in the process.
The driver of the Kia, a 54-year-old man, and his passenger, a 70-year-old woman, both from New Bedford, were found suffering from serious injuries. Freetown Fire Department and EMS worked to save the pair's lives, but both succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.
Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
The incident is under investigation by the following organizations:

- The Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section
- The Crime Scene Services Section
- Bristol County State Police Detective Unit
The driver of one of the vehicles the Kia smashed into received minor injuries. The names of the New Dedham pair have not been released.
